In 2018, Get ready to Bleed Away the Sky

Please join me in congratulating Brian Fatah Steele for being the first author to be signed after the recent Bloodshot Books Open Call.

This coming year we will be publishing his novel BLEED AWAY THE SKY.

Steele has been writing various types of dark fiction for over ten years, from horror to urban fantasy and science fiction. Growing up hooked on comic books and monster movies, his work gravitates towards anything imaginative and dynamic.

His work has appeared in such places as 4POCALYPSE, BLOOD TYPE, WHITE FACE DEATH, 4RCHETYPES, DEATH’S REALM, THE IDOLATERS OF CTHULHU, PAYING THE FERRYMAN, and the Bram Stoker Award-nominated DARK VISIONS, VOL.1. His own titles include the urban fantasy novel IN BLEED COUNTRY, the post-mythic novella collection FURTHER THAN FATE, and the dark sci-fi collection BRUTAL STARLIGHT.

Check out the short synopsis he sent along with his submission:

“A secret cabal and nightmarish monsters turn a road trip into a desperate escape as a young woman tries to outrun destiny.”

Audrey wants to enjoy the cross-country road trip her brother has planned, despite her anxiety, but destiny has other plans. It turns out that she’s the last remaining descendent of a bloodline responsible for holding ancient barriers in place and she hasn’t been doing her job. Now a secret cabal is after her, determined to force her into her role, while nightmarish things seep up from other realms, and would see her dead, so that they can be free forever. Audrey must make a choice about these new powers, about how to deal with the strange blood in her lineage, and about whether the world is worth saving or not”

The October Boys Have a Tale to Tell.

It’s time to announce our next signing.

Please join me in congratulating Adam Millard. His novel THE OCTOBER BOYS hooked me from the first chapter and I’m certain that it will be keeping people up way past midnight when it’s released sometime around next Halloween.

Adam has been doing this for quite some time. He is the author of twenty-two novels,

thirteen novellas, and more than two hundred short stories in various collections and anthologies. He may be best known for his post-apocalyptic fiction, but Adam also writes fantasy/horror for children and Bizarro fiction for several publishers, who enjoy his tales of flesh-eating clown-beetles and rabies-infected derrieres so much that they keep printing them. His “Dead” series has recently been the filling in a Stephen King/Bram Stoker sandwich on Amazon’s bestsellers chart. Adam is a regular columnist for UK horror website, This Is Horror.

Here’s a short synopsis he included with his submission:

“Halloween, 1988, a group of twelve-year-old boys are trick-or-treating. Off in the distance, the discordant chimes of an ice-cream truck seem somehow incongruous for a cold autumnal night. And then it’s there, idling at the end of the street, its driver a faceless shadow.

That was the night it took one of them.

It’s 2017, and Halloween is fast approaching. Tom Craven and his friends are still haunted by the events of their childhood, and the fact that their friend was never found. Plagued by horrific visions, Tom returns to the place where it all began, only to discover he’s not the only one who can feel it. His friends have already arrived and are preparing for a battle which could get them all killed.

The Ice Cream Man is back, returning to claim the ones that got away.”

Sounds pretty damned good, don’t it?? 😈🍦😈

Halloween is a special time of year for anyone involved in the horror genre, especially the small presses (like Bloodshot Books, of course) that spread their love of all over social media like a generous slathering of mayonnaise on a hoagie. And anyone who knows me, particularly my best bud from college, Barak Blackburn, will agree that I LOVE MAYONNAISE.
So, I’m quite happy to announce that, over the next few days, Bloodshot Books will be featured on Becky Spratford’s Reader’s Advisory for Horror in their Small Press Horror feature. Becky starts it off today with her intro (with a nod to our mutual friend Anna Popp), then over the next 5 days, your favorite mayo-loving publisher and 4 of our authors will contribute a blog post to the series. Please check in every day, and share them far and wide.

  • Do not ask me any questions without reading this entire open call first.  Multiple times, if necessary. If you ask me anything that is listed below, I will simply direct you back to this page.
  • If your novel is not finished, DO NOT submit it.

Length: 30K to 120K. Please query for longer. Nothing shorter will be considered

Manuscripts in the following subgenres will be favored, but we are willing consider other subjects:

  • Coming of Age Horror
  • Creature horror (cryptids/multicultural myths especially interest us)

  • Supernatural horror
  • Apocalyptic TEOTWAWKI scenarios
  • Weird west/other historical horror

Whether you are a first-time author or you have published dozens of novels already, we are interested in your original manuscripts. This open call is not for my Second Sight imprint. Until I decide otherwise, that line of reprints will only be from solicited authors.

Submissions should be sent to petekahle@gmail.com with the following:

  • NOVEL SUBMISSION – Title of your novel in the subject line

We are NOT looking for:

  • Zombie novels. Sorry, but there are enough out there. We would prefer to explore new horrors.
  • Sparkly vampires or fuzzy lycanthropes. Vampires and werewolves are fine, but we want bloodthirsty monsters that will rip their victims to pieces
  • Dark Fantasy/Supernatural Romance – Pardon me while I vomit in the corner
  • Erotica – No thank you
  • Serial Killer Fiction UNLESS there is a supernatural aspect to the plot
  • What some people refer to as “Torture Porn”
    • Gore and adult themes are welcome, but they should serve the plot.
  • Poetry
  • Collections (though I will consider publishing interconnected novellas)
  • Young Adult Novels – Eventually we’ll publish books for a younger audience, but not yet.

Response Time: 90 days. Query if we take any longer. If I like what I’ve read so far, I will request the entire manuscript.

Payment: Royalty split and author copies (with the opportunity to buy more author copies at 50% of list price).

So, what are you waiting for?? Get me those manuscripts now!

p.s. – Short story writers, keep an eye out for another open call soon, sometime around November/December

A global disaster strikes suddenly when the Space Shuttle explodes over the Atlantic seaboard, unleashing its toxic payload over thousands of miles. Millions flee. Millions more perish in the deluge . . . and they are the lucky ones. Those who do not die immediately after exposure soon sicken and succumb in horrific agony.

Their minds still function, but their flesh continues to bloat and decay. Ostracized by the fortunate few who have escaped the radioactive rain and quarantined to the water’s edge, the “Beachers” are treated as inhuman monsters by family and friends; soon they will become as loathsome in behavior as they are in appearance.

For one particular survivor – a single mother named Sandy – the monster is very familiar. He will put her through a Hell beyond her darkest nightmares, but in order to protect her child, she will endure and do anything. Absolutely anything.

This is kind of a BIG DEAL!

I’ve been sitting on this one a while….
A couple of months ago, I decided to approach a renowned UK author who has been writing in the horror genre for close to 3 decades. I wanted to see if he would be interested in reprinting a short novel of his that had only come out in limited edition 612mfHOPIaL._UX250_from Earthling Publications several years back.
In one of those truly serendipitous moments, when I went to his Facebook page, I saw a note that he had posted only a few hours earlier mentioning that he had recently found an unpublished manuscript of his that would have been his first published novel if the deal hadn’t fallen through. His subsequent novel went on to become a huge hit and, in my opinion, it’s a classic of the genre. In the aforementioned post, he mused whether anyone thought a small press would be interested in publishing the trunk novel.
Obviously, I messaged him saying, “ME, ME, ME!!!”
I think I’ve strung this announcement on long enough. The author in question is Mark Morris. He burst onto the scene with his novel TOADY (known as THE HORROR CLUB here in the US) and has since written numerous other novels such as STITCH, THE DELUGE, MR. BAD FACE, and most recently itsustains_lgTHE OBSIDIAN HEART Trilogy.
We have signed deals to reprint his novel IT SUSTAINS this autumn as well as the project he rediscovered, THE WINTER TREE, which will come out early 2018 with a cover designed by Vincent Chong
Along with this unearthed manuscript, Mark will also contribute an introduction and an afterword, detailing, among other topics, how it feels 30 years later to look at the raw words he wrote when he was but a wee lad in his early 20s.
This is going to be fun.
